Continuing Our Sustainable Efforts: Second Launch of REAP Reaches Out to More
PowerSeraya’s sustainability programme aimed at benefiting the community on energy conservation has expanded in its second year launch in 2011. Responsible Energy Advocates Programme or otherwise known as REAP, enrolled a total of 27 tertiary students to assist 50 households save energy in their homes, reaching out to more than triple the number of households who benefited during the programme’s first year.
The energy monitoring period was held over three months where students visited the participating households to advise residents on saving energy either through behavioural changes or use of energy-saving fittings. Their results surpassed that of the previous year’s – 67% of the households successfully achieved energy savings over the period of July to September 2011 compared to 60% in 2010. At the same time, 30% of them managed to achieve at least 10% energy savings through the programme.
Of the top three households with the greatest energy savings over the same period, they achieved at least 30% energy savings with the top winner attaining an impressive 49% energy savings. As a reward for their participation and efforts, the residents from these top three households received their cash prizes during the South West Clean & Green Carnival held on 19 November 2011.
REAP is a 3P (People-Public-Private) programme developed by PowerSeraya in partnership with NEA and South West CDC, and was first launched in 2010. As REAP is highly customised in nature, only selected students of up to 30 will be enrolled for the programme each year, which will see them help a target of about 50 households save energy.
